Answer first: strike rate is runs per hundred balls and measures speed. Batting average is runs per dismissal and measures reliability. Bowling economy is runs per over and measures containment. None of the three is meaningful without knowing which phase of the innings a player operated in and how many innings the figure is built from.
Cricket statistics are unusually easy to quote and unusually easy to misuse. A single number gets pulled out of a scorecard, put on a graphic, and shared a hundred thousand times before anyone asks what it was measuring. Batting Strike Rate
Formula: (runs ÷ balls faced) × 100.
A batter who scores 45 from 30 balls has a strike rate of 150. In a Twenty20 innings of 120 balls, tempo is the scarce resource, which is why this number has become the headline batting statistic of the format.
What it hides: everything about risk. A batter who scores 12 from 4 balls and is then dismissed has a strike rate of 300 and has contributed almost nothing. Strike rate has no denominator for dismissals at all, which is why it must always be read next to a volume figure.
Batting Average
Formula: runs ÷ number of dismissals.
The critical detail is that the divisor is dismissals, not innings. Every not-out innings adds runs without adding to the denominator. For a lower-order batter who is frequently unbeaten at the end of a chase, this inflates the average considerably relative to what they actually contribute.
What it hides: tempo. A batter averaging 35 at a strike rate of 110 in a T20 side may be actively costing runs even while looking statistically solid, because the balls they consumed could have been used faster by somebody else.
Bowling Economy and Bowling Average
Economy: runs conceded ÷ overs bowled. An economy of 6.50 means six and a half runs an over.
Bowling average: runs conceded ÷ wickets taken. Lower is better in both cases.
In Test cricket, bowling average dominates because wickets end innings. In T20 the innings ends after twenty overs whatever happens, so preventing runs has value in its own right. A bowler who goes wicketless for 18 runs in four overs has usually done a better job for the side than one who takes two for 48. This is why economy is the number that leads most T20 bowling conversations.
Phase Context Changes Everything
A T20 innings has three distinct phases and each has a different natural scoring rate and risk profile. Comparing players across phases without adjusting is the single most common error in casual analysis.
- Powerplay (overs 1–6). Fielding restrictions, hard new ball, highest boundary opportunity and highest dismissal risk.
- Middle (overs 7–15). Spread field, usually spin. Scoring rates typically dip and the job shifts towards rotating strike and picking bowlers to attack.
- Death (overs 16–20). Specialist bowling, set fields, maximum aggression. High strike rates here are also high-variance.
A strike rate of 140 in the middle overs and a strike rate of 140 at the death are two entirely different achievements. Any comparison worth reading states the phase.
The Small-Sample Trap
This is the one that catches out almost everybody, especially with young players. Statistics stabilise slowly. Over five or six innings, a single hundred or a single golden duck moves a career figure enormously. Over a hundred innings, it barely registers.

- Boundary percentage. The share of balls faced that went for four or six. A useful proxy for how a batter generates runs.
- Dot-ball percentage. For bowlers, often more informative than economy alone, since dots create the pressure that produces wickets.
- Control percentage. The proportion of deliveries a batter met as intended. A useful corrective when a scratchy innings produces a flattering score.
